Deftones - One Weak
From their 1995 debut album Adrenaline, this one song probably most singularly identifies how the Deftones differed from the other hit bands of the same period. The album also contained the singles ‘Bored’ and ‘7 Words’, the first of which was more accessible and radio-friendly, while the other consisted mostly of screamed profanities and definitely attracted the more hardcore audience. ‘One Weak’, though, linked throaty crooned spirituality-exploring lyrics with frenetic pleading screaming, linked their trademark wall-of-sound, with it’s rapid and dramatic chord changes with Chi Cheng’s brilliantly reverberating lead-bass style. Wanna know what else happened musically in 1995? Coolio, Shaggy and Take That were the top-charting acts, Sheryl Crow and Springsteen took home Grammys, and TLC’s fucking ‘Waterfalls’ took home Best Video at the MVAs . At least Portishead won the Mercury Award… that saved the year from being a complete loss.
(Also, the album cover is a snot-sucker. Sweet!)
